The North East S2 9.1 Fleet is growing! We will have 5 boats on the start line for the YRA of Long Island Sound Championships this weekend, Aug 11-12. 1 boat short of getting our own division. Unfortunately there are 3 other 9.1s in our area that did not sign up.

We had our off-season meeting of the NYC Metro boats last week - 6 boats were represented. We plan to have a S2 9.1 start in the YRALIS Championships on August 12-13 and the Larchmont NOOD on Sept. 9-10.

Several of the NYC area boats also plan to do Block Island Race Week and the Around Long Island Race. I know there is some interest in these events in the Eastern CT boats too, and I would ask anyone interested to e-mail me at mpbergmann@earthlink.net or call my cell phone at 845-664-3620.

Six S2 9.1 owners met at the “Black Whale” in City Island, NY last Friday. Boats represented were Magic, Indecent Proposal, Hound Dog, Galatea, Wild Child, and Shooting Star. Over dinner and a few beverages, we came up with the beginnings of a race program for 2006.

We don’t have a formal organization, and we aren’t sure we need one right now. Since the boats range from a short rig with standard sails to a SE model, we aren’t ready for true one-design racing, so we will probably stay with PHRF for now.

All agreed that our events for 2006 would be:

Red Grant Regatta, July 8-9, Raritan Yacht Club, NJ (benefit Juvenile Diabetes)
Leukemia Cup, August 5, City Island Yacht Club, NY
YRALIS PHRF Championship, August 26-27, Riverside Yacht Club, CT
NOOD, September 9-10, Larchmont Yacht Club, NY

Alll S2 9.1's are welcome to join us. Any owner who is interested should contact Mike Bergmann at 845-664-3620 or by e-mail at mpbergmann@earthlink.net

As some of you may have noticed from a previous post, we had 4 S2's at the YRALIS Championship last year. All of us want to do more racing against other S2's. I would appreciate it if anyone who has an S2 9.1 in the NYC Metro area would contact me. I am trying to get as many owners as possible together to discuss some form of racing for next season.

Four s2 9.1's got together in the 2nd Annual YRALIS PHRF Championships at Riverside (CT) YC on August 27 and 28. Winds ranged from 5 to 20 knots.

Sailing in a division with numbers from 129 to 165, Larry Boxerman and Toby Moors took 4 bullets out of 5 races in "Indecent Proposal", and also won the trophy for the best performing PHRF boat in the regatta. Christian Uecker in "Hound Dog" took second, Richard Correll in "Loki III" was third, and Mike Bergmann in "Shooting Star" was fifth, but got some consolation by getting the other bullet.

Everyone had a great time, and we all agreed to put this event on our race calendars from now on. Most of the owners are interested in getting together two or three times a year, and we think we can organize an informal fleet in the Long Island Sound/NYC Metro area. Anyone who is interested please contact Mike Bergmann at mpbergmann@earthlink.net

Indecent Proposal and Loki III came in first and second respectively on the 190 mile Around Long Island Race.

Tough upwind conditions on the offshore leg, with 15-20 knots winds on the nose the whole way, and 5-7 feet seas. And just after rounding Montauk light in heavy fog, the wind switched to Southwest for the return down the Long Island Sound side. A few rolling thunderstorms with torrential rain, each time followed by 1-2 knot zephyrs and banks of fog made an interesting night for all crews. It wasn't until the last couple of hours when all the various boats in our division 'appeared' in the mist, making the final dash up to the finish feel more like a regular round the buoys day race. But the results tell the tale - the S2s prevailed !

40 hours of rain, wind, cold cuts and oatmeal, sweaty foulies and seasick crew - we couldn't wait to sign up again for next year !

Both boats are newly owned since last year, and hoping to start an S2 9.1 resurgence in the North East.

Great class website
All the best

News From LONG ISLAND SOUND, Spring 1999

Douglaston NY - Joe Heslin reports that although his 9.1SE Sailin Shoes is still for sale, that hasn’t kept them from racing. In the Spring of 1999 they did six races in the American Yacht Club’s Spring Series on Long Island Sound. After scoring six firsts and even throwing one out, boats with 7 and 8 points were awarded boat-of-the-week and runner-up. Obviously shocked, Joe asked the Chairman “What do I have to do to win this thing?” Joe would like to do a Chicago-to-Mac on a 9.1!
