John,
While I have not heard of any problems specifically like yours, I wanted to offer a couple thoughts:

First, you may want to check the alignment of these cracks to any structural components of the boat. I'm thinking that if the cracks are about 10 ft aft of the bow, they may be in alignment with one of the bulkheads near the lav or locker. If so, then you probably have very good reason to test the boat's structural rigidity. The hull may be flexing fore/aft due to weakness somewhere in the hull, perhaps near the mast step (a popular problem). This would ideally be investigated by a competent yard.

The other explanation may be that the baby stay or forestay has been too tight (or loose) and the front of the boat is stressed or "hanging" out in space a little in heavy seas...?

Otherwise, what you are experiencing may just be a function of age and the resin used on the earlier hulls (I have #2, although I don't have this problem - I do have blisters currentlly being repaired).

Please keep us posted as to your findings. Good luck!

I am wondering if anyone else has experienced any gelcote cracking or hull delamination at the water line. I own hull #5 and am experiencing some cracking in the gelcote specifically along the boot stripe on the port and stbd bow (aft 10 feet) and also on stbd side near the stern.

The cracks are not major and there is no water intrusion to the fiberglass (yet). I'm not too worried because the cracks are above the water line and on a vertical surface. Also, I never thought gelcote was a terrific water barrier to begin with.

I have checked other 9.1s on the Chespeake and haven't seen any problems like this. Has anyone experienced this? Have you repaired?
