The location under the port settee is a lot better than the one forward of the head. The discharge thru-hull on my boat is forward and it has always bothered me as it looks like it must add a lot of drag. It is such a critical area of flow.

When I bought my boat in 1996, it had the direct discharge only (no tank.) The fitting was about 8 inches aft of the bulkhead under the port settee.

I removed the thru-hull and glassed it over. I have a 13-gallon Todd tank in the space immediately forward of the fuel tank. It is a very tight fit - I had to do some carpentry on the settee supports.

If you have not bought your tank yet, check out www.boatdepot.com. They have a huge selection of tanks, and you can get custom fitting locations on some. I got my new fresh water tank there last year, and I am very satisfied.

My head discharge goes directly into the tank. The pumpout line goes to a tee with a PVC ball valve. With another tee and two more valves, I can pump the tank out through the bilge pump under the cockpit in an emergency.

Since I normally sail in zero-discharge zones, this system works fine (I never have had to use the alternate pumpout for real, but I can if I have to - not legally, of course!)

The regular pumpout line goes back through the bulkhead and goes up to the deck through the cabinets in the head compartment. The vent line follows the fuel tank vent line aft to an extra vent fitting on the transom. I rarely get odors.

I did all this because I noticed that our boats don't really like having any weight forward of the mast. You will probably notice that the boat sits slightly bow down when no one is on board. I decided I did not want to add 150 pounds or so 4 ft. forward of the mast, so I squeezed under the port settee.

I'll take a shot at this: I dug up a pic from last year which is not the best but it may give you an idea where mine is located from the outside. It's the thru-hull just forward of the stand, factory installed I believe (lousy white arrow). As well, I took a few measurements inside for you. Sorry about no inside pics here - PC problem at present.

I layed a tape measure flush along the curve of the hull, from center-line up to mid-point of the discharge on the port side, and got 21". I then measured off the forward bulkhead, forward to the mid-point again, and got 6 3/4 - 7".

My holding tank is under the port settee, and one hose of the three-way goes back there. The direct discharge hose comes through the forward bulkhead, makes a loop and ends at an elbow fitting on the thru-hull. At the dimensions given above, the location is a few inches higher, and slightly forward of that stringer under the v-berth. Hope this helps, and let me know if there's more info that can.

I'm working on putting in a new holding tank as many of you seem to have already done. I've read jeff's nice article, but I have a cupboard under the v-berth and the tank mockup I made seems to need to sit aft more than I can put it . Forward it takes up too much storage space. I'm on the hard right now and would like to put my direct discharge thru hull in as my boat didn't come equipped with one. And deal with the tank later(I might regret working backwards ) Where is it located on other boats? It seems possible to barely fit onejust forward of the main bulkhead seperating the head and v-berthand behind the stringer.? Which would be right along side the depth and speed transducers(just replaced those). Or it seems it would have to be in the same area as the holding tank?? Yikes I don't like drilling holes in boats.
