Posted on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 - 03:57 pm:        2001 GREAT LAKES CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS 17 Races completed at 4 events (20 races originally planned). Results for the individual events are found immediately below in previous posts to the board. In accordance with the Class Rules, boats were scored on their best 12 of 17 finishes (70% of completed races). Also in accordance with the Rules, races in which a boat did not attend were scored 13 (the total number of competitors plus 1). As always, the incentive is clear to "come out and play". Total points for all races have also been included in that they also support the final results. It should be noted that for the first time in recent memory, no boats were able to attend ALL the events. Thus "throw-outs" were utilized by only 3 boats and played a very small role in the final standings. Past winners again found their way to the top of the standings in 2001 with Kato repeating their 2000 Championship. Several boats are still "rookies" on this circuit but are have shown steady improvement. In fact, the past indicates that no boat has ever "three-peated"... so we look forward to another great season of racing and the liklihood of a fresh look to the results next year! Trophies will be awarded to the top 4 boats at the 2001/2002 Annual Class Winter meeting. Posted on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 - 03:32 pm:        RESULTS FROM 2001 GOVERNORS CUP REGATTA Muskegon Yacht Club Muskegon, Michigan September 1-2, 2001 The final event on the 2001 Great Lakes Championship calendar. Blue skies, fair temperatures and 5-15 knot breezes were experienced on both days. The challenge was presented by lumpy seas left over from recent storms. These storms made deliveries to the regatta very unpleasant and prevented Slingshot of Chicago from completing the trip to Muskegon. Several of the Slingshot crew had already driven to Muskegon and a few, including owner Eric Oesterle, chose to crew with other boats that were in attendance. Unfortunately, scheduling conflicts with other major Lake Michigan regattas prevented the fleet from participating in larger numbers at this event. With final positions in the Season Championship at stake, starts were tight. At least one boat was called over the start line early in nearly every race. Chris Sundberg's Stimulator had a shot at Kato for the Championship, but Don Rychlinski's crew sailed to three consecutive bullets to spoil those hopes. The Scooter crew also had a clear shot at fourth for the season but their outstanding downwind performance could not make up for sporadic upwind boatspeed and two poor starts. Unable to capitalize on the opportunity, Scooter finished the season 1 point behind Slingshot. It was clear that a mere 3 ft at the finish line in the final race at the Grand Prix had cost Scooter a second in Milwaukee and a 4th place Seasonal trophy. Multiple winner of past Seasonal and NA Championships Greg Young and his boat Spectra returned to the scene for the first time this year at this event. Posted on Friday, August 10, 2001 - 07:43 pm:        Grand Prix Results The regatta began with the annual off-water competition (bowling) on Friday evening. Flourescent shoes & balls, bowling bowl shaped beer bottles, and ear deafening music made the night an event to remember. Those who played paid the next morning. On Saturday, due to the light breezes only 2 races were completed. After finishing the morning race the S-2 9.1's had ample time to swelter in the 90° heat or go frolicing in the water. Cleaning weeds from props was also a popular activity. Race 2 ended with a complete mixup in the winners circle, leaving a 4 way tie for 1st day. After the races, the annual drawing for give-a-ways was held. We really missed not having Dick English here to pull the names from the hat. Would like to recognize the businesses that provided some really great stuff, especially Sailnet.com for the $100 & $50 gift certificates, T-shirts & mouse pads. Buy from these guys! We also got good gifts from Boats US, West Marine & Sailing Magazine. Sunday's racing was very competetive with the stiffer 10-15 knot breezes - better boat roundings and less current to deal with. Posted on Wednesday, June 06, 2001 - 06:23 pm:        On June 2nd, the 2001 Lake Michigan race series started from the South Haven Yacht Club. There were six, 9.1's ready to race, and the lake served up 10 to 15 knots of breeze out of the southwest. The race committee gave the fleet instructions to use the new starting sequence, which gives lots of flags and horns during the countdown sequence. It will be good to have those starts in before the Chicago NOOD's. On Saturday we had a full day of racing, starting with 2, 4 leg, 5 mile courses. Then as the wind built, the last race called for 5 legs. The final beat had boats feathering both sails, and crews hiking hard, just to keep from rounding up. Wind speeds over 30 knots were noticed by several boats on that final leg. After racing, and on the way back, we noticed lots of water down below. It reminded us that it is a good idea to keep those bow hatches dogged down in big air, most of the time. Russ Fender, our fleet commodore, and webmaster, continued to serve our fleet in a big way. He was a key member of the race committee. They did a great job of keeping up with the constant wind changes, moving the weather mark before each race, to keep up with the veering air. The wind never let up through the night, so the cold, grey, sunday morning brought another day of racing into question. The waves of 5 to 7 feet, a cold north wind, and sub 30 wind chills made it pretty clear for some boats that racing was done for the weekend. While waiting for the final call on racing, the results were tallied, and when the races were finally called, results were announced right away. So the fleet has 3 races in for the season, and the boats that raced, got big air, double digit boat speed, exciting jibes and mark roundings, and valuable crew training. Posted on Monday, July 23, 2001 - 10:08 am:        The 2001 Hook is over. It was another challenging day and 1/2 of racing handling wind angle and velocity changes. There were times for reefed mains and blades, doing 8 knots with runner spinnakers, and no wind waiting for a little breeze. Oh yes, we did have some times when the main activity was killing flys. And the Hook had better wind this year then the MAC. There were 3 S2 9.1s in the race. Paradox finished 3rd, Nomad finished 5th, and Kahuna finished 6th. There were also crew from Entropy in the race and they plan on being there next year with Entropy as a participant. The Hook is a great race for the S2 9.1. Hope to see more S2 9.1s next year.   Loren Thompson Rating: N/A Votes: 0 (Vote!) Posted on Monday, July 09, 2001 - 01:15 pm:        It has been an exciting summer of MORF racing in Chicago. Our first point series was completed on June 31 with Kahuna beating Paradox by 4 seconds. The lead was exchanged 4 times. Both 9.1s passed most of the J30s before the gybe mark ( the J30s started 5 minutes before the start of the S2 9.1 section). Kahuna and Paradox were also 1 and 2 in fleet. Paradox won the series with finishes of 2, 1, 2, 1, 2 and Kahuna was second with finishes of 1, 2, 4, 3, 1. Our second series started on July 7 with Paradox getting a first and Kahuna coming in second. The fleet had 3 shredded spinnakers occuring in the 3rd leg. Boats were carrying their running spinnakers at 95 degrees with gusts up to 18 knots. The 9.1s were happy to have no sail damage.
