I am mostly a racer, and my boat Shooting Star is set up that way. I generally take a two-week cruise every year, and I have a few tricks I use to "convert" the boat to a cruiser.

I have a way to install temporary lazy jacks without going up the mast:

I use a length of 5/16" line about 30 ft. long. I tie a loop in the exact center of this length. I attach this loop to one of the "wing" halyards, and hoist this up just above the lower spreaders. I then reach up with a boat hook and bring both free ends over the spreaders and aft of the shrouds. I tie a small bowline in each end and support lazy jacks from that point. Once everything is set up, I raise the halyard up to just above the upper spreaders, and my lazy jacks run from the upper spreaders down to the boom. Tension is controlled by the halyard.

I can set this up in about 15 minutes, and dismantle it in less. It is a fast way to go from racing mode to cruising mode, and back again.
