Here is a summary of the 2000 Great Lakes Championship. 2000 GREAT LAKES ONE DESIGN CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES EVENTS: June 3-4, 20000: South Haven Invitational, South Haven MI (5 races) June 16-18, 2000: Chicago NOOD Regatta, NA One Design Championship, Chicago IL (5 races) August 5-6, 2000: Milwaukee Grand Prix Regatta, Milwaukee WI (4 races completed of 5 planned) September 2-3, 2000: Muskegon Governors Cup, Muskegon MI (3 races completed of 5 planned) Seventeen races were completed of 20 scheduled. In accordance with the Rules, each entrant's best 12 finishes (70 percent of the races completed) were totalled to determine their final seasonal position. To promote participation, and also in accordance with the Rules, boats completing less than 12 races were awarded 14 points per unfinished scoring race (total number of boats competing in the series +1). Ties were broken according to the Racing Rules of Sailing. Noteworthy: Seven different boats won races in 2000 (over half the boats participating). Four boats had a shot at second going into the last event. Two boats tied for third overall, with another only two points back. This was Kato's first Great Lakes Championship since joining the fleet in 1994. Kato also won the 2000 North American One Design Championship. As always, "it paid to come and play", as boats which attended several regattas finished higher in the seasonal standings.
